SuperAger brains resist protein tangles that lead to Alzheimer s

Northwestern Now Findings open new avenue of research in memory loss Northwestern studies SuperAgers to better understand what is going right in their brains. A new Northwestern Medicine study showed cognitive SuperAgers have resistance to the development of fibrous tangles in a brain region related to memory and which are known to be markers of Alzheimer’s disease.  The tangles are made of the tau protein which forms structures that transport nutrients within the nerve cell. These tangles disrupt the cell’s transport system, hampering communication within the neuron and preventing nutrients from performing their particular job within the cell. The end result of tangle formation is cell death.

AMNM successfully performs invasive fertility surgery in Qatar  28 Feb 2021 - 9:53 A view of an inpatient room at Alfardan Medical with North-western Medicine. The Peninsula Doha: Alfardan Medical with Northwestern Medicine (AMNM), Qatar’s renowned and medically advanced ambulatory care center, recently conducted an innovative fertility preserving operation to remove a uterine polyp, which is usually associated with infertility, heavy menstruation, and anaemia.  The surgical procedure was performed for the first time in Qatar by AMNM’s Reproductive Medicine Physician and Gynaecologist, Dr. Guy Fender to minimize the surgical impact on the cervix and the uterine lining. The minimally invasive technique used increases spontaneous and In vitro Fertilization (IVF) treated pregnancy success and reduces the risk of premature delivery. The value of this approach allows surgeons to avoid damaging the uterine lining caused by traditional techniques which are associated with ther

Radiological images confirm COVID-19 can cause the body to attack itself

Radiological images confirm ‘COVID-19 can cause the body to attack itself Imaging illustrates severity, long-term prognosis of COVID-19-related muscle, joint pain MRI of the foot in a patient with severe COVID-19. Muscle soreness and achy joints are common symptoms among COVID-19 patients. But for some people, symptoms are more severe, long lasting and even bizarre, including rheumatoid arthritis flares, autoimmune myositis or “COVID toes.”  A new Northwestern Medicine study has, for the first time, confirmed and illustrated the causes of these symptoms through radiological imaging. “We’ve realized that the COVID virus can trigger the body to attack itself in different ways, which may lead to rheumatological issues that require lifelong management,” said corresponding author Dr. Swati Deshmukh.
