Study implicates diaphragm dysfunction as a potential cause for prolonged COVID-19 impairments

Study implicates diaphragm dysfunction as a potential cause for prolonged COVID-19 impairments By using a neuromuscular ultrasound technique, US researchers reveal that patients who necessitate inpatient rehabilitation after acute hospitalization due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have a very high prevalence of diaphragm dysfunction, which is a major muscle of respiration. The study is currently available on medRxiv preprint server. Technique for neuromuscular ultrasound examination of hemi-diaphragm. Recent studies have shown that basically half of all the patients are not able to return to their working duties two months after hospital discharge.

Under wraps: X-rays reveal 1,900-year-old mummy s secrets

Under wraps: X-rays reveal 1,900-year-old mummy’s secrets Results of noninvasive tests at Argonne National Laboratory point to a new way to study mummified specimens December 09, 2020 This is the first time an intact mummy was examined using X-ray diffraction techniques. The mummified remains of ancient Egyptians hold many secrets, from the condition of the bodies to the artifacts placed within the burial garments. Now a team of researchers has found a way to unwrap those secrets, without unraveling the mummies themselves. Three years ago, researchers from Northwestern, in preparation for an exhibit at the Block Museum of Art, carefully transported a 1,900-year-old mummy to the Advanced Photon Source (APS), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility at DOE’s Argonne National Laboratory. There scientists used powerful X-ray beams to peer inside the layers of linen and resin to examine the two-thousand-year-old bones and objects buried within.

Can Some Treatments Be Stopped in IBD?

This article is a collaboration between MedPage Today and: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) who are in remission on combination therapy may withdraw one of their medications usually a tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor if they are at low risk and are followed closely, according to a researcher. The question all our patients have been asking is when they can stop or cut down on therapy if they re in remission, said Stephen Hanauer, MD, of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, during an oral presentation at the Advances in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases virtual meeting. This is the huge elephant that many of us blind men have tried to tackle over the past years, he added.
