During the 1960s and 1970s, America was at war on several fronts. Baby boomers, the hippies, were caught up in the culture wars, which included hard drug use resulting in heroin addiction. It was front-page news that other boomers, soldiers, were coming home from the Vietnam War addicted to heroin. In a speech in 1971, President Nixon declared drug addiction as public enemy number one, foreshadowing today s opioid crisis.

Plymouth City Manager Dave Callister announced that Erik Fadden has been selected to fill the dual post of Plymouth public safety director and police chief, effective Monday, Feb. 1. A 16-year veteran of the Plymouth Police Department, Fadden has served as deputy police chief since 2018.

Fadden will fill the vacancy that will be created when Public Safety Director and Police Chief Mike Goldstein retires at the end of January. Fadden s appointment comes after an internal search.
As public safety director, Fadden will lead the Public Safety Department, which encompasses the Plymouth Police and Fire departments, as well as emergency management services. In the role, Fadden will be responsible for the overall administration, strategic planning and financial oversight of the Public Safety Department.

Today’s installment of Old Mission History comes from my Mom’s scrapbook, which is a wealth of fascinating information about not only her life growing up in the south, but also after she married my Dad in 1946 and moved to the Old Mission Peninsula in 1947. They met at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Now in my possession are many large scrapbooks full of super-cool stuff dating back to her childhood through her school and college years to life on the OMP.
The legal issue is whether Trump or any of the speakers at Wednesday s rally near the White House that preceded the assault on the Capitol incited violence and whether they knew their words would have that effect.
