Laura Pyrak-Nolte has dedicated her work at Purdue University to understanding fractures with the goal of ensuring environmental safety and enhancing renewable energy production. Pyrak-Nolte, Distinguished Professor of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Science, is one of Purdue’s latest members of the National Academy of Engineering, among the highest professional honors accorded to any engineer in the United States. Also honored as part of the Purdue family among the academy’s latest class of 106 members is an adjunct professor, Santokh Badesha, and six alumni including alumnus Christopher Burke, a well-respected expert in water resource projects.

Leaders in robotics, transportation and operations, receive highest professional distinction accorded to engineers Feb 9, 2021 // Julianne Hill Northwestern Engineering’s J. Edward Colgate and Hani Mahmassani, leaders in robotics and transportation and operations, respectively, have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), one of the highest professional distinctions awarded to an engineer. These faculty from the McCormick School of Engineering now stand among the 106 new domestic members and 23 new international members announced by the NAE today, February 9. They will be formally inducted during a ceremony at the NAE’s annual meeting on October 3, 2021, in Washington, D.C. New inductees are elected by current NAE members. Members have distinguished themselves in business and academic management, in technical positions, as university faculty, and as leaders in government and private engineering organizations.

EVANSTON, Ill. (WLS) Moderna s COVID-19 vaccine is the next to be considered for emergency use authorization in the United States after the vaccine by Pfizer and BioNTech was approved last week. Shipments of a second vaccine are likely to coming soon as the FDA gives authorization for the Moderna vaccine. The FDA found no serious safety concerns with the Moderna vaccine and affirmed its 95% efficacy, Gov. JB Pritzker said. Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are similar in terms of dosage. Both vaccines require two doses with three weeks in between for Pfizer and four weeks for Moderna. However, they differ in storage. Moderna does not require extremely low temperatures. It is likely that the Pfizer vaccine stays at hospitals when it comes to distribution.
