Chinese national pleads guilty in US court for illegal exports of marine tech ANI | Updated: Apr 29, 2021 22:13 IST Washington DC [US], April 29 (ANI): A Chinese national has pleaded guilty in a US federal court in Boston in connection with illegally procuring and causing the illegal export of US-origin goods to a Chinese military university. A US Justice Department release said that 44-year-old Shuren Qin used to smuggle marine technology to China s Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU), which works closely with the People s Liberation Army on the advancement of its military capabilities. Qin had established LinkOcean Technologies in 2014 which he used to import goods and technology with underwater and marine applications into China from the United States, Canada, and Europe.

Spy scandal: Businessman admits smuggling marine tech to China Shuren Qin has been accused of smuggling marine tech to help China develop underwater drones (Getty Images) A Chinese businessman has pleaded guilty to smuggling marine technology out of the US to help China’s efforts to develop underwater military drones. Shuren Qin, a marine biologist who owns a company that sells oceanographic instruments, pleaded guilty in Boston federal court to illegally exporting devices called hydrophones, which monitor sound underwater. His plea related to 10 counts filed in 2018 including conspiring to commit export violations, visa fraud, money laundering and smuggling. Prosecutors had also accused Qin of exporting unmanned surface vehicles and robotic boats and alleged he had supplied $8m in goods to companies controlled by the Chinese government between 2015 and 2018.

Shuren Qin, a marine biologist and founder of a company that sells oceanographic instruments, pleaded guilty in Boston federal court to illegally exporting to China devices called hydrophones that can be used to monitor sound underwater. He was charged in 2018 amid rising U.S. concerns about the national security threat posed by China.
