College freshman from N.J. designs COVID-themed chessboard [nj.com]
As The Queen’s Gambit fervor continues to sweep the nation, a college freshman has combined the only two things that seem to be on everybody’s mind of late: COVID-19 and chess.
The unlikely mash-up resulted in a “COVID-19 Quarantine Essentials” chessboard, whose checkered squares sit atop a first-aid box fau00e7ade and which features a Clorox bottle as the knight, toilet paper as the bishop and Purell as the queen.
The brainchild of William Paterson University freshman Nicholas Montesano, 18, the design came about after 3D Design Professor Henry Yoo assigned students to create a themed chess board. Inspired by the pandemic, Montesano ditched his earlier concepts, like a cartoon or skyscraper theme, and opted for something timelier and more resonant.

Each item stands in for a piece: the Lysol bottle is the king, Clorox as the knight, toilet paper as the bishop, masks as the pawns and Purell hand sanitizer as the queen.Courtesy of Nicholas Montesano
