26 Massachusetts cities and towns at high risk for coronavirus transmission, decline by almost half Erin Tiernan © Provided by Boston Herald Massachusetts cities and towns at high (red), moderate (yellow) and low (green) risk for COVID-19 transmission as of April 29, 2021, per the state Department of Public Health. The number of cities and towns at high risk for COVID-19 transmission dropped by almost half, declining for the third straight week as officials flip their focus to getting shots into arms.
“We need to make sure we’re focusing on vaccination efforts,” said Revere Mayor Brian Arrigo, whose city has spent more time in the red zone than out since the pandemic began. “The red, yellow, and green is less of a priority certainly we want to move out of the red, but I think we’ll see that happen as vaccinations go up.”
Watch: Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker provides COVID vaccination update
Updated 12:04 PM;
Gov. Charlie Baker will tour the vaccination site at Oceanside Events Center in Revere and hold a news conference alongside other state and local leaders.
Joining Baker are Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, Secretary of Health and Human Services Marylou Sudders, Revere Mayor Brian Arrigo and East Boston Neighborhood Health Center President and CEO Manny Lopes.
Baker plans to provide an update on the state’s vaccination efforts. The press conference was scheduled to begin at noon.
Active infections in Massachusetts dipped slightly to 34,652 on Tuesday, down from 35,167 reported on Monday after the state missed a day of reporting due to the Easter holiday. Since the pandemic began, officials have confirmed 609,533 total COVID-19 cases across the state.
Residents who pre-registered for a vaccine appointment through the state will have access to appointments through the Amherst-Northampton and Marshfield regional collaboratives beginning this week, Gov. Charlie Baker said Wednesday from Revere where he was touring a vaccination clinic.
The addition of the regional collaboratives to the preregistration system increases the number of appointments available to eligible residents who have been waiting for their turn to come around at one of the seven mass vaccination sites.
Baker said more than 1.5 million people have pre-registered for a shot, and over 800,000 have been contacted with a chance to book an appointment. Prior to this change, however, residents were restricted to booking an appointment at the mass vaccination clinic closest to their home.
