Chris Ward and Deputy Logan Fox A man who fatally shot two family members ambushed and killed two sheriff s deputies who responded to the scene, prompting a 13-hour standoff in which the shooter died. Sgt. Chris Ward and K-9 Deputy Logan Fox were ambushed just before 10 a.m. Wednesday as they entered a home in Boone, according to a Watauga County Sheriff s Office press release. The shooter and his two slain family members have not been publicly identified, but WSOC-TV reports that the two victims were the shooter s mother and stepfather. It was not immediately clear how the shooter was killed.

A third officer was also shot in the standoff. The deputies were shot while responding to a welfare check at a home on Hardaman Circle in Boone after the homeowner and his family did not go to work or respond to phone calls. The standoff began around 9:44 a.m. Wednesday and ended just before 11 p.m.

© Getty Images Two sheriff’s deputies were shot in western North Carolina on Wednesday, and a suspect remains barricaded inside of a home at the scene of the shooting.  Law enforcement went to a home in Boone, N.C., to perform a wellness check on a family after they did not attend their workplaces or respond to phone calls, the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a statement to The Hill. Sheriff’s deputies were fired upon after entering the home, and two were struck.  One of the deputies was flown to Johnson City Medical Center in nearby Johnson City, Tenn., for treatment. The other deputy, whose condition is unknown, was still at the scene Wednesday afternoon.
