BOONE, N.C. (AP) Two deputies were killed and three other people including a suspected gunman were found dead after a lengthy standoff in North Carolina, a sheriff s office said Thursday.

April 29 (UPI) Five people are dead, including two sheriff s deputies, after a lengthy standoff in northwestern North Carolina that began with gunfire, authorities said.
Officials said the standoff began on Wednesday when deputies performed a welfare check at a Boone, N.C., home after the owner and family members failed to show up for work and didn t answer phone calls.
Advertisement Deputies entered the residence after discovering all vehicles belonging to the residents were on the property, the Watauga County Sheriff s Office said in a statement. Upon entering the home, two Watauga County Sheriff s deputies received gunshot wounds from an unknown individual within the residence.

Isaac Alton Barnes, 32, is accused of killing his mother Michelle Annette Ligon, 61, and stepfather George Wyatt Ligon, 58
He then began a 13-hour shootout with sheriffs deputies who responded to the home in Boone for a welfare check
Sgt. Chris Ward and K-9 Deputy Logan Fox who were among the first cops on the scene, were also shot and killed
The massacre began as deputies conducted the welfare check at the Boone home at 9:44am Wednesday

Two deputies and three others are dead following an hours-long standoff in Boone, North Carolina. The incident began Wednesday (April 28) morning when deputies with the Watauga County Sheriff s Office went to perform a welfare check after the homeowner and his family didn t show up for work.
As officers entered the house, they came under fire. Two of the deputies were shot. One of the officers, Sergeant
Chris Ward, was extracted from the scene and rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The other officer,
Logan Fox, remained trapped inside, and deputies were unable to rescue him as the homeowner shot at them as soon as they got close to the home. He was later pronounced dead. A third officer with the Boone Police Department was also shot. He was struck in the head but was wearing a helmet that saved his life.
