Luba is an Asiatic black bear cub – a species threatened by illegal wildlife trade and marked as “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Terde bought her for Rs 1,000 from a local hunter in his village of Lipu Yomcha in the East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh in February last year.

It marked the end of existence for India’s Asiatic cheetahs, with Ramanuj Pratap Singh Deo, the maharaja of Koriya, a small kingdom located in the central state of Chhattisgarh, hunting down the last of the country’s predators. With few unconfirmed sightings in subsequent years, the species was declared extinct by the Indian state in 1952. Now, almost 70 years later, the world’s fastest mammal is set to walk on Indian grasslands again. Having reached an understanding with South Africa and Namibia, the first batch of African cheetah is expected to arrive by the end of this year marking the first time that a large carnivore has been relocated from one continent to another.

Walong is around 557 kilometres from the state capital. The bird was spotted and photographed by divisional forest officer (DFO) of Anjaw Santosh Kumar Reddy, range forest officer Nosing Pul and scientist Dekbin Yonggam earlier this month. The white-bellied heron is categorised as ‘critically endangered’ in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red Data Book and is listed in Schedule IV in the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
