A new World War II memorial in Arlington pays respects to the 50 men from the city who died on battlefields from 1941 to 1945.
Community leaders gathered Saturday to dedicate the bronze and granite memorial, which is in City Center Plaza between City Hall and the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library.

Construction will begin soon on the new Courthouse Park as the Alexander County Board of Commissioners approved a bid for the project at their meeting Monday (April 26).
David Icenhour, Executive Director for the Alexander County Economic Development Corporation, recommended the low bid submitted by Lail Builders, Inc. of Hickory totaling $609,560. It was noted that Lail Builders, Inc. is not associated with Commissioner Josh Lail. The Alexander County park project will consist of grading, site work, landscaping, sidewalks, and a performance stage on county property located at 131 West Main Avenue in downtown Taylorsville.
VENICE â Since Floridaâs Certified Local Government program was established in 1986, a total of 78 cities and counties throughout the state have become members.
As such, they have access to special grants as well as an abundance of resources and networking opportunities to help preserve and manage historic resources.
And during the last 35 years, no member of the program has elected to drop out.
For more than a decade, Venice leaders have considered joining the program. While benefits seemingly outweigh drawbacks, some community leaders remain reluctant to join.
At a recent workshop of the cityâs planning commission, Veniceâs director of planning stated that âjust because the Comprehensive Plan calls for us to pursue, that doesnât mean we have to do it.â
