Small said the Timaru District Council had been really helpful by allowing the participants to use Caroline Bay for the protest. Co-organiser of the South Canterbury protest, Jeremy Talbot, said the protest followed a huge amount of stress in the rural community, caused by Government regulations or proposed regulations including land and water reforms and land use rules. Talbot said the new tax on high emission utes was the final straw. Protests are also planned in more than 40 locations, from Kerikeri to Invercargill, and participants are encouraged to bring their dogs with them to make some noise, hence the name: ‘A Howl of a Protest’.

The Taxpayers’ Union is slamming the stuff up at IRD which required the removal of a faulty online tax calculator from its website after an accountant in Napier discovered it had a flaw that could lead to people paying too much tax.

Press Release – New Zealand Taxpayers’ Union
The Taxpayers’ Union says that Treasury is right to blow the whistle on the long term implications on New Zealanders’ living standards, and is tracking the Debt Monster in real time at www.DebtClock.nz.
Union spokesman Jordan Williams says, “New Zealand has close to full employment but the Government is running a Budget deficit of nearly 5% of GDP. That means that debt has already clocked up more than $65,000 for every Kiwi household.”
“The Government is mortgaging our kids’ futures when it is not needed. Poor quality spending like the ridiculous Auckland harbour bike bridge don’t come free or without consequence.”
Protests are also planned in nearly 40 locations from Kerikeri to Invercargill and participants are encouraged to bring their dogs with them to make some noise, hence the name: Howl of a protest. “This is a peaceful protest for the Government to take another look at the regulations of the clean car scheme,” Howl of a protest national convenor, Bryce McKenzie said.

Taxpayers’ Union spokesman Jordan Williams said: “When this policy was first announced, we immediately labelled it a Car Tax that would have absolutely no impact on carbon emissions. However, it seems that we actually underestimated the real impact.”
