While former Vice President Joe Biden is set to be inaugurated on Jan. 20 as the nation’s 46th president and the Democrats will control both chambers of Congress, that doesn’t assure smooth sailing for his policy agenda, according to experts on both sides of the partisan aisle.
Biden’s problem is the numbers: His party controls the Senate by one vote, that of Vice President Kamala Harris, but only when there’s a split among the upper chamber’s 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans.
That means if, for instance, Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia goes against the grain of his partisan colleagues, Harris won’t be called on to break a tie on the issue at hand.

Expecting the same waste at agriculture department The federal government certainly has no issue spending taxpayer money these days. The budget deficit for 2020 surpassed $3 trillion, a level far beyond any the nation has seen. For perspective, this is the largest deficit relative to the size of our economy since World War II and the largest raw number deficit in our nation’s history. The next administration is going to inherit an increasingly urgent spending problem that has plagued the United States for decades. Despite these alarming numbers, President-elect Joe Biden seems intent to nominate for his cabinet some of the same officials who helped get us into this mess. While the rest of the nation added jobs for the seventh consecutive month in November, Illinois lost 20,000 from mid-October to mid-November, according to data released Dec. 17 by the Illinois Department of Employment Security. This is the second time in the past three months Illinois shed jobs as the rest of the nation’s economy recovered.
The bulk of the losses came from the leisure and hospitality industry, which lost 27,400 jobs during the month. These losses come amid the statewide ban on indoor dining implemented by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, which took effect Nov. 4. It is likely the industry will continue to suffer jobs losses for the foreseeable future, as the ban remains in place and Illinois has since implemented further mitigation protocols that limit economic activity.
