On April 1, 2021, the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore issued a summary of an advance ruling concerning franchise income earned by a Singaporean company from licensing intellectual property rights.
The anonymized ruling says the franchise income derived by the Singapore company from outside Singapore is taxable in Singapore when it is remitted to Singapore, or is deemed to have been remitted.

IRAS said the ruling was granted to one of the world s largest technology suppliers in a certain industry.

This happened because of errors in the business re-opening dates used to determine these payouts, as agencies had to process, at short notice, more than 1.8mn applications from businesses to resume operations after Circuit Breaker.
Around 5,400 businesses in Singapore were wrongly credited excess Jobs Support Scheme (JSS) payouts last year, during a round of disbursements in October. In total, about S$370mn was credited in excess, making up about 6% of the JSS paid out in that month, and affecting about 3.6% of all firms which received the payouts.

SINGAPORE: About S$370 million in government payouts under the Jobs Support Scheme (JSS) were erroneously credited to about 5,400 companies in October last year, after mistakes were made in computing the disbursements.
The overpayments make up about 6 per cent of the total amount paid out under JSS last October, said the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), the Ministry of Finance (MOF) and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) on Thursday (Apr 8).
