The FNB Madibaz rugby team are ready to measure themselves against some of the best sides in the competition when the last block of Varsity Cup matches gets underway on Monday.
The annual student tournament was postponed for a week due to Covid-19 concerns, but now the Nelson Mandela University outfit are gearing up for the final challenge.
Coach Andre Tredoux knows it will not be easy as they will be up against three of the top four teams on the log in Stellenbosch, second-placed UP-Tuks and frontrunners UCT.
However, the Madibaz mentor said they would continue to produce their best out on the field.

BACKGROUND: Tamzyne, 30, and Andries Oosthuizen from Roodepoort’s love story begins in grade eight at Hoërskool Monument. At that young age, Andries told his mom that he would one day marry Tamzyne and 12 years later, he did. Over the past four years, they’ve built their life as a family, with the addition of their daughter, Tamia, who is now three years old.
“Andries and Tamia are inseparable - she calls him her liefie ,” says Tamzyne. Besides the two girls who stole his heart, all who know Andries will tell you about his other love and talent: rugby. Andries was a super-fast wing and played Craven Week in High School, Varsity Cup for UJ, under 21’s for the Lions, and for the Blitzbokke. A few years ago, Andries started a borehole drilling company with a friend. He worked hard to provide for his young family.
Madibaz determined to continue Varsity Cup fight, says skipper
FNB Madibaz rugby captain Luyolo Dapula says they will continue the fight to land that elusive win after an agonising loss against Free State University in the Varsity Cup at the weekend.
The Nelson Mandela University outfit, back in the competition’s top flight for the first time since 2018, went down 24-20 to a try by Shimlas which came after the final hooter had sounded.
It has left them at the bottom of the log but Dapula, who was named the Player that Rocks, said they were not disheartened despite the position.
