Virginia Beach School Board approves $828 8 million budget for 2021-22 fiscal year, including pay raise for staff

and last updated 2021-03-03 17:16:50-05 VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Virginia Beach School Board approved an $828.8 million operating budget Tuesday for Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) 2021-22 fiscal year. Within the budget includes a 5% pay raise for all staff, which includes a 4.5% pay increase in cost-of-living adjustment and a .5% step increase for those reaching or below top of school system s pay scale. We believe the initiatives outlined in this plan are essential to providing VBCPS students and staff with the supports they need to succeed during the ongoing health pandemic and beyond, said Board Chairwoman Carolyn Rye. The budget will provide funding to increase allowances for advanced degrees, to upgrade school counseling department chairs and to move all custodians up one pay grade.

Pre-kindergarten through sixth grade were given the option, as part of a plan approved by the school board. The 4 th grade daughter of Betsy Dixon turns 10 today, and she said returning to school was her wish. “She said all I really want is to go back in-person , and I was like, ‘I’m not sure I can make that happen.’ She said, I understand, but that’s what I really want more than anything is just to go back and see my friends,’” Dixon explained.

On Sunday, a group of teachers, parents and students attended a virtual rally and expressed their concerns about a potential return to in-person learning. During the rally, teachers said they want to stay virtual until Covid-19 cases go down in Virginia Beach. Facebook group Virginia Beach Educators United hosted the virtual rally to voice their opposition to in-person learning. Virginia Beach City Public School teachers voiced their concerns. Peter Ayala was one of them. “The safety and the well being has to be at the forefront, and it can’t be there if the staff can’t keep their mental health. if they can’t keep feel comfortable in doing their job, said Ayala.
