On April 21, 2021, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam signed into law House Bill No. 2312 and Senate Bill No. 1406, moving the date of recreational marijuana legalization in Virginia up to July 1, 2021. The legalization movement, which has increased in momentum in the Commonwealth since Democrats gained a majority in the legislature, culminated in February 2021, when the General Assembly passed recreational legalization measures with an effective date of January 2024. The substance of these measures, which remains largely unchanged in the final legislative text, permits the recreational use of marijuana by adults who are at least 21 years old, allows for wholesale and retail sale of marijuana, and allows home cultivation and personal use of marijuana (up to four plants for personal use). The Democratic frontrunner to replace Virginia Governor Ralph Northam criticized the state s new budget, which Northam recently called very progressive.
McAuliffe blasted the new budget signed by Northam, saying the state had bigger problems if it could not find more money to invest in public schools.
Northam announced that he had signed the budget on Monday, calling the measure great and saying it was a very progressive budget. Virginia recently adopted a $135 billion budget, McAuliffe tweeted. If we can’t find $2 billion to invest in our students, we ve got bigger problems.

Most recently, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser lifted both indoor and outdoor mask mandates for fully vaccinated people unless a business specifically requests otherwise.
More changes are coming. Starting Friday, May 21, most restrictions on public and commercial activity will be lifted. On June 11, bars, nightclubs, and large entertainment venues will be allowed to fully reopen.
