Franklin High School senior gets into 40 colleges, receives over $1.6M in scholarships

FRANKLIN, Va. - A Franklin High School senior has been accepted into 40 colleges and offered more than $1.6 million in scholarships.
Sam Lyons, 18, began sending out college applications in August 2020 and might still receive more scholarship money or acceptance letters, according to Franklin High School guidance counselor Ale Massenburg. Some of the schools Lyons has been accepted to so far include the University of Richmond, George Mason University, Virginia Commonwealth University and Ferrum College. It was very time-consuming. I had to manage my time while applying to so many schools and doing virtual learning, Lyons said. âI didnât really know what to expect since it was my first time applying to colleges. I didn t expect to get offered so much in scholarship money.â

Two pharmaceutical companies have halted clinical trials of gene-targeting therapies for Huntington’s disease (HD), following the drugs’ disappointing performance.
Researchers had hoped that the treatments known as antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) would be a game changer for HD, an incurable genetic condition that affects cognition, behaviour and movement. But back-to-back announcements from Roche, headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, and Wave Life Sciences, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, have dealt a crushing blow to those affected by the disease.
“I was really shocked, really tearful,” says Marion, a woman in London with HD, who was part of one of the trials. “We didn’t see it coming at all. I felt really frightened and worried about my future.” Marion requested that her last name be withheld to protect her privacy.

RICHMOND, Va. College graduations will still look different due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but more Virginia universities are returning to in-person ceremonies.
Graduations will be held online, in person or a hybrid format. Gov. Ralph Northam announced last month preliminary guidance for graduation events, which continues to be updated.
“The acceleration of the vaccine program and the decrease in new COVID-19 cases make it safer to ease restrictions on activities like in-person graduations,” Northam stated in March.
