Doha: Research conducted by Aia Zaina – a Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar) student – has been accepted for the Environment Design Research Association EDRA52 conference to be held in Detroit, US, in May this year.
Her thesis titled ‘Prioritizing Place for a Fuller Understanding of Homelessness, highlights the need for further understanding into homeless shelters, and explores the problem of homelessness as one that goes beyond rooflessness.
For her research, the VCUarts Qatar Interior Design senior studied existing dwellings for the homeless around the globe, and gathered information to show that architects, interior designers, built environment experts, and policy makers need to focus on dwelling designs that foster emotional connectivity, a sense of belonging, and identity, among occupants.

US “excess deaths” in 2020 surpassed the toll during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic
According to a report published Friday by the
New York Times, in 2020 the United States suffered the biggest single-year surge in its death rate since the federal government began publishing statistics, significantly surpassing the rise in the death rate during the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic.

The
Times conducted its own analysis of annual US death rates going back a century and found that the rate jump from 2019 to 2020, the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, was 16 percent, as compared to the 12 percent surge in the US during the global pandemic that occurred over a century ago. The total number of COVID-19 deaths in the US is already approaching 600,000, on track to surpass the 675,000 estimated to have been killed in the US during the 1918 pandemic.

Doha: Three graduating students from Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar’s (VCUarts Qatar) Graphic and Interior design departments were the recipients of the Arab Engineering Bureau (AEB) Awards for Design Excellence, for 2021, while two junior students were honoured with AEB’s award for Creative Achievement and Potential.
This year’s ceremony, held online, was significant in that it marked the 15-year milestone of the awards, and the partnership between VCUarts Qatar a Qatar Foundation partner university and AEB.

Doha: ‘How does this design make me feel, and why is it that I feel this way?’ – When an interior design student first asked herself that question during a project in her sophomore year at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar) in 2015, little did she know that that query would become a compass to keep her on the right course of every design-related journey she would undertake over the following years – all the way to creating an award-winning entry for a design competition in France.
