Fulfilling their campaign promises to take action against gun violence, Democrats in the General Assembly are sending Gov. Ralph Northam several gun-violence prevention bills. Lawmakers are taking action to exclude guns at polling places and government buildings, creating new restrictions for people convicted of domestic violence and extending the time allowed for the State Police to conduct background checks. The bills this year come after several new laws were created last year, requiring universal background checks and allowing local governments to regulate firearms.
“Virginia is a leader now,” said Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian Moran, who formerly represented Alexandria in the House of Delegates. “We’ve gone from dead last to first in terms of responsible gun-control legislation.

The James City County Police Department will be offering four, free one-session firearm safety courses to the public through April at the county’s Law Enforcement Center.
The first class is Saturday.
“Each one-session class will cover basic safety, handling, storage and laws related to carrying a concealed handgun in the Commonwealth of Virginia,” according to a James City County Police Department news release.
“The course does not include hands-on training, and personal firearms should be left at home in a secure location,” the department added.

Bills to ban firearms from the grounds of state capitol buildings in Washington State and Virginia are still advancing, but as we detail on today’s Bearing Arms’ Cam & Co, several other states are moving to protect the right of citizens to bear arms, even under the statehouse domes.
First, the bad news. In Virginia, it looks like a near certainty that a ban on legally-owned and lawfully-carried firearms in and around the state Capitol will get to Gov. Ralph Northam’s desk. There have been plenty of lawmakers in Richmond objecting to the proposal, but unfortunately they’re all in the Republican minority.

A top Virginia gun-rights organization is back on Facebook after another enforcement error from the social media company.
The Virginia Citizens Defense League s Facebook page was restored on Saturday after being banned from the platform at the end of January. The company, which had insisted that the ban was reviewed and final, conceded that it made a mistake in taking down the page for the second time in two months.
