All optional remote instruction ended Sunday, and most employees who have been working on a virtual basis will return to campus Monday, the Opelika-Auburn News reports. The decision to reopen was based on multiple factors, said Dr. Fred Kam, director of the university medical clinic. “You’re looking at all the data, all of the information and … you’re forecasting on where you think things will be,” Kam said. The university has seen a downward trend in COVID-19 since 113 cases were reported during the week ending Jan. 17. sadams@newsandsentinel.com CHARLESTON West Virginia’s two unions representing educators are not happy with plans to bring staff and students back to school in-person and are skeptical about plans to have teachers vaccinated against COVID-19 in time. Gov. Jim Justice announced last week that Pre-K, elementary schools and middle schools will reopen for in-person learning Jan. 19 regardless of a county’s color on the County Alert System map. High schools also will reopen for in-person learning as long as the county is not listed as red due to high infection rates or percent of positivity. As result of the changes, the weekly Department of Education County Alert System map is being discontinued in favor of the County Alert System map updated daily by the Department of Health and Human Resources. As of Tuesday, 48 out of 55 counties were red for high rates of COVID-19 infection or high percent of positivity rates.
