That includes information about race, ethnicity, age, and the gender of the person who was stopped. Results of the stop, like warnings, citations, or vehicle searches, are also collected. Credit NPR State police released a tranche of that data Thursday. In a media briefing Friday, Keon Turner, who manages of data analysis and reporting for the state police, said it s important to keep some things in mind: that Covid was at play when the data was collected, and the numbers are continually updated.

(WDBJ) - Virginia’s recent criminal justice reforms include a closer look at police traffic stops. And now, there’s a tool to help Virginians understand what’s happening in their communities. The Virginia Community Policing Act was passed in 2020, and expanded in 2021. With each traffic stop, state law requires the officer to collect, and the law enforcement agency to report, several pieces of information, including: the race, ethnicity and gender of the person who was stopped, the reason for the traffic stop and whether or not the officer, or the citizen, used physical force.

Lawmakers and state police aim to make police data more accessible with new website The new website is a result of the Virginia Community Policing Act Tags:  Community policing data released Friday ROANOKE, Va – Virginia lawmakers and state police are working to make crime data more accessible with a new website. Last summer, the General Assembly passed the Virginia Community Policing Act, which requires officers to record certain data every time they make a stop. The act led to the creation of the Virginia Data Open Portal, a website that has stop data from Virginia law enforcement agencies from July 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021.
