RICHMOND, Va. As the shutdown of a major fuel pipeline entered into its fifth day, companies and government officials took steps to stave off potential fuel shortages, although no widespread disruptions of fuel supplies were reported Tuesday morning.
Colonial Pipeline, which delivers about 45% of the fuel consumed on the East Coast, was hit by a cyberattack on Friday.
âIn Virginia, we have one source really for our petroleum products and thatâs the Colonial Pipeline, Mike O Connor, with the Virginia Petroleum and Convenience Marketers, said. Weâre not sure when thatâs going to re-open and consequently thatâs creating the short-term supply problem and distribution problem we are seeing today.â

A day after Colonial Pipeline said there was light at the end of the tunnel for the line’s closure due to a cyberattack, the impact of the shutdown on the ground is being felt.
Specifically, there are widespread reports of stations running out of gasoline, along with social media pictures of both lines of cars seeking to buy gasoline and bags covering fuel pumps to drive home the point that they’re out of fuel.

The West Virginia Legislature has passed a bill to allow use or nonuse of seat belts as admissible evidence in civil actions, a legislative step the trucking industry has applauded.
Specifically, the legislation, which was passed April 7, establishes the admissibility of evidence related to seat belt use with regard to a claimant’s damages. The bill states when a person making a claim for damages in a civil action was the driver of a passenger vehicle involved in a collision from which damages suffered by the claimant driver arose, evidence that the claimant driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision may be admissible in court. This evidence would be used to show that his or her failure to wear a seat belt exacerbated or contributed to the claimant driver’s damages, the bill states.
