The old schoolhouse doesnât look like much now â weather-beaten and worn, it stood neglected for decades before an effort to save it kicked into gear two years ago, and now there also is the worrying possibility of having a landfill nearby â but it holds fond memories for Alfred L. Austin, who grew up on a Cumberland County farm 3 miles away.
âI used to get up in the morning, milk six cows, walk to school, spend the day at school, then walk home and milk six cows again,â he said. âAmong other things.â
In the era of segregation in the 1950s, school was a prized opportunity for Austin and other Black children in this section of Cumberland. The county provided a school for Black students, but it was 10 miles from Austinâs home and, without transportation, he simply couldnât attend.
Arlington Regional Master Naturalists is expanding its public-education efforts on controlling the deer population, and is pressing the Arlington and Alexandria governments to join another local jurisdiction in culling herds within their borders.
âWe need human intervention,â said Marion Jordan, head of the Master Naturalists organization, at a Dec. 11 program sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension.
The organizationâs outreach efforts have reached more than 700 people, and its conclusions are sound, she said.
âWeâve done a lot of research,â Jordan said.
At the same time, she acknowledged the situation was both a âlarge and complexâ one and a âserious topicâ that could provoke community division.

(Updated at 6:40 p.m.) Arlington will be under a Winter Weather Advisory on Wednesday as a storm system brings periods of rain, snow and possibly ice to the immediate D.C. area.
The advisory was Tuesday afternoon and includes Arlington, Alexandria and D.C., where 1-2 inches of snow is expected to fall amid the mix of precipitation.

A contentious $346 million project to expand natural gas pipelines and infrastructure in Virginia took another hit last week when the State Corporation Commission tossed an application to approve the plan.
But the Dec. 1 decision to dismiss a request for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity isn t a knockout blow for the Header Improvement Project, which would impact sites and communities in Prince William County, Charles City County, Caroline County and the city of Chesapeake. The commission said Virginia Natural Gas is free to submit another application under a new docket.
