RICHMOND, Va. - Flags across the Commonwealth will be lowered half-staff in honor of a Virginia police officer who was killed in the line of duty last month.
Virginia State Police said Gov. Ralph Northam ordered U.S. and Virginia flags to be lowered Thursday from sunrise to sunset in memory of Stanley Police Officer Dominic J. Nick Winum.
According to the Associated Press, Officer Winum, 48, was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Feb. 26. He was reportedly shot before he could get out of his patrol vehicle.
Winum had been with the Stanley Police Department since 2016, and he had previously been a Virginia State Police Trooper, AP reported.
Virginia State Police Trooper K. Isom is investigating a fatal crash in Pittsylvania County. The crash occurred Dec. 28, 2020 at 7:20 p.m. on Wards Road, less than a mile west of Level Run Road.Â
A 2002 Mazda 626 was traveling west on Wards Road when it ran off the right side. The driver overcorrected, which caused the vehicle to cross back over the road, cross the centerline and run off the left side and overturn several times.

The driver, Jerry G. Mohr, 65, of Altavista, Va., died at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.Â

Virginia State Police Trooper P. Salamanca is investigating a single-vehicle crash in Pulaski County. The crash was one in a series of crashes that occurred on I-81 at the 94 mile marker Wednesday (Dec. 16) morning. At approximately 7:45 a.m., a Toyota Tacoma was traveling on I-81 when it ran off the right side of I-81, struck an embankment and overturned. The driver, Brannagan K. Locklear, 19, of Pembroke, N.C., was transported to LewisGale Hospital in Pulaski, where he succumbed to his injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Slick road conditions were a factor in the cause of the crash.
