CHARLESTON â A Williamson man is one of five West Virginians recently chosen by Gov. Jim Justice to serve as the first members of the stateâs new Flatwater Trail Commission.
John Burchett, a Tug River advocate and community volunteer, was named to the newly formed commission on Feb. 5. The commission was created by the West Virginia Legislature in 2020 to support a growing demand for water-based trails in West Virginia.
In recent years, the popularity of recreational boating â whether it be via kayaks, paddleboards and motorboats â has generated interest in the sport throughout the stateâs rural areas, which offer many rivers suitable for trail expansion.

SHAVERS FORK A bald eagle was released back into the wild in Randolph County Monday after being nursed back to health from lead poisoning, officials said.
West Virginia Division of Natural Resources police officers, with the assistance Jo Santiago and Dylan Lewis with the U.S Forest Service International Programs, were able to successfully release a bald eagle that was found suffering from lead toxicity in Pocahontas County in January.

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. According to preliminary data collected by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, hunters in the Mountain State harvested 106,861 white-tailed deer during the 2020-2021 fall and winter seasons.
The harvest was 7.5 percent higher than the 2019 harvest of 99,437 deer and 6 percent below the five-year average of 113,444.
A breakdown of the combined 2020 deer seasons reveals a total of 38,785 bucks were harvested during the traditional buck firearm season, 31,255 antlerless deer were taken during all antlerless firearm hunting opportunities, 31,564 deer were harvested by bows and crossbows in urban and regular archery/crossbow seasons, 4,615 deer were tak
