Gov. Ralph Northam shocked Virginians in 2019 when he withstood calls for his resignation, a move that has paved the way for Gov. Andrew Cuomo to do the same in New York.
At the beginning, Northam looked like he was doomed. Early in 2019, he seemingly
endorsed late-term abortions on a local radio show, a blunder that snowballed into the unearthing of college
yearbook photos featuring him dressed either in blackface or as a klansman. Democrats were outraged. Northam faced calls for his resignation from top Democrats ranging from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to former Virginia Gov. Terry MacAuliffe.
Equal Rights Amendment Can t Be Ratified, Judge Rules, but Case Could Head to Supreme Court

A judge has ruled that the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) cannot be added to the Constitution despite its ratification by two-thirds of all U.S. states because the original deadline for its ratification has passed nearly 40 years ago. However, the case could still head to the Supreme Court.
The ERA is a constitutional amendment that specifically states that women are entitled to the same legal rights as men. The amendment reads, Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

A federal judge on Friday dismissed a lawsuit filed by three Democratic state attorneys general that had sought to force the federal government to recognize Virginia s vote last year to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment and add it to the Constitution.
Shortly after Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the amendment that supporters say will guarantee women equal rights under the law, the archivist of the United States declared he would take no action to certify the amendment’s adoption.
