Charita Goshay: The misuse of American flags at last week s riot

The average Ohioan couldn t identify, say, Wyoming s state flag on a dare. But Ohio s? There s nothing else like it. Created by John Eisemann and officially adopted in 1902, Ohio has the only state flag that isn t a rectangle. Called a burgee, its swallowtail design debuted at the Pan American Exposition in 1901, the same unfortunate venue where Ohio native President William McKinley was mortally wounded by an anarchist. The sight of the Ohio burgee as last week s protests on Capitol Hill devolved into a riot made this Ohioan s stomach drop, the same way that spotting that Ohio license plate on the car used to kill Heather Heyer in Charlottesville did in 2017.

2020 Year in Review: Feature Stories • The Yellow Springs News

Yellow Springs kicked off the beginning of 2020, as always, with the traditional ball drop overseen by Lance Rudegeair; MTFR personnel handed out hot cocoa, and at least one marriage proposal greeted the new year. The Reach Out Free Clinic, which was held each Tuesday evening at Central Chapel AME Church, celebrated a year of operation in early January. The free, donation-based clinic, a satellite location of Reach Out Dayton, closed due to the pandemic in March; the Dayton location shuttered permanently later in the year. Nan Harshaw, longtime chair of the MLK Day Planning Committee, was awarded the annual Peacemaker Award at the 2020 Martin Luther King Day celebration. The late Willa Dallas was also recognized for her civil rights efforts and her role in initiating the annual local event.

An illuminating comparison of Ann Petry s The Street and Gwendolyn Brooks s Maud Martha with Cynthia Kadohata s The Floating World and Chang-rae Lee s Native Speaker by You-me Park and Gayle Wald ( Native Daughters in the Promised Land: Gender, Race, and the Question of Separate Spheres, AL 70: 607-33) establishes the extent to which minority literature represents the boundaries between public and private spheres in the United States and how these boundaries reinforce and overlap class and gender lines. The critics conclusion is that both the African American and Asian American groups are feminized (in the sense of being marked under the sign of the feminine).
