A local Awami League leader widely criticised for misappropriating rice meant for poor people has won an award for making special contributions to social service .
Shah Alam, industries and commerce affairs secretary of Brahmanbaria AL, was awarded by the Department of Social Services on National Social Services Day 2021 on Saturday.
Photos of him receiving the award from the deputy commissioner in the presence of other officials and local dignitaries went viral on Facebook yesterday.
Amid criticisms, Deputy Commissioner Hayat-ud-Dowla Khan wrote a letter yesterday evening, asking Deputy Director Masudul Hasan Taposh of the social services department to explain in 24 hours how Alam got nominated for the award.
Onion prices tumble as imports from India start

The price of onions has dropped to Tk 10-15 per kilogram as the import of the daily essentials from India started yesterday.
The price of local variety of onions is Tk 35-45 per kg, while that of imported ones is Tk 25 to 35 as of yesterday, according to the data provided by Trading Corporation of Bangladesh.
A week ago, the price of the local variety was Tk 45-60 and imported variety Tk 30-45 per kg.
Yesterday, Indian onion import through the Hili land ports of Dinajpur resumed after 108 days as the Indian government on Monday lifted the export ban of the important ingredient, after it had imposed ban on onion export to Bangladesh on September 14 last year.
Imported rice from India to reach Mongla Port in Jan
Another consignment of rice being imported from India will reach the Mongla Port next month, a Food Department official said Wednesday.
Bangladesh is importing 100,000 metric tonnes of rice from India in a bid to keep the price of rice stable in the local market. Forty percent of the rice will come through Mongla port.
The imported rice will be supplied to Rangpur, Rajshahi, Barishal and Khulna divisions.
Already, the first consignment of rice (4,200MT) from India has reached the Chattogram Port.
The government has signed a deal with PK Agri Link and Rita Impress International Company for the rice import.

India withdrew its ban on onion export on Monday, nearly three and a half months after imposing it abruptly which sent the commodity s price through the roof in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh will resume onion import through Dinajpur’s Hili land port on January 1 next, officials here said.
The decision was announced through a notification from India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
Businessmen at the Hili port have confirmed the development.
Onion prices jumped sharply in Bangladesh after India banned export of the popular kitchen item on Sept 14 in the pretext of local shortage and price hike.
