While Pakistan is fighting a case in the European Union against the Indian move to get Basmati rice registered as its product, the commodity is still not registered as a local product in the country, according to a media report.
Laws require that before applying for registration of any product in the international market it has to be protected under the geographical indication (GI) laws of that country.
The Dawn reported that there are no rules of the Geographical Indications (Registration and Protection) Act, 2020 enacted in March this year and as a result, Basmati is not yet a protected product in Pakistan.

Speaking on the occasion, Afghan Commerce Minister said that Afghanistan welcomes the Pakistani investors in the country. He said Afghanistan desires to reach South Asian markets.

Prime Minister Imran Khan is all set to sign a letter, which is already signed by the presidents of Afghanistan and Uzbekistan, seeking $4.8 billion loan from the World Bank for a railway line project connecting Pakistan with Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and the Central Asian Republics.
According to Pakistan Railways’ officials, the premier will sign the letter during the visit of the deputy prime minister of Uzbekistan in the next week, saying once the “Joint Appeal Letter” is signed, it will be sent to the president of World Bank for final approval.
