Report: Treasury Hacked by Group Backed by Foreign Government

A report published on Sunday revealed that data stored by the United States Treasury was compromised by a sophisticated hacking group backed by a foreign government. The hackers also infiltrated the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration. The National Security Council launched an investigation into the incident after a meeting on Saturday at the White House.
According to a report by Reuters, a sophisticated hacker group has stolen information from the United States Treasury as well as the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration. The group, which is reportedly backed by a foreign government, reportedly stole information from both federal agencies.

WASHINGTON: Hackers believed to be working for Russia have been monitoring internal email traffic at the US Treasury Department and an agency that decides internet and telecommunications policy, according to people familiar with the matter.
There is concern within the US intelligence community that the hackers who targeted Treasury and the Commerce Department s National Telecommunications and Information Administration used a similar tool to break into other government agencies, according to four people briefed on the matter.
Hackers believed to be working for Russia have been monitoring internal email traffic at the US Treasury Department and an agency that decides internet and telecommunications policy, people familiar with the matter told the news agency Reuters.
There is concern within the US intelligence community that the hackers who targeted Treasury and the Commerce Department’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration used a similar tool to break into other government agencies, according to four people briefed on the matter. The people did not say which other agencies.
Three of the people familiar with the investigation said Russia is currently believed to be behind the attack.
