New Delhi [India], May 7 (ANI): India has worked with South Africa and other partners in the WTO to seek relaxation in the norms of the TRIPS agreement, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla said on Friday and noted that this waiver will be an important step for enabling the rapid scaling up of manufacture and timely availability of affordable COVID-19 vaccines and essential medical products on a global basis.
Speaking at UNSC high-level meeting on Maintenance of international peace and security: upholding multilateralism and the United Nations-centred international system , Shringla said lack of a coordinated global response has exposed the vulnerabilities and weaknesses of the multilateral system and the pandemic has exposed the fault lines from unreliable global supply chains to inequitable vaccine distribution .
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday sought Australia s support to seek a temporary waiver from certain provisions of the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement. The waiver is aimed at ensuring that more countries get equitable access to vaccines and medicines for Covid-19. Spoke with my friend Scott Morrison MP to thank him for Australia’s solidarity and support for India’s fight against the pandemic. We agreed on the importance of ensuring affordable and equitable access to vaccines and medicines, and discussed possible initiatives in this regard, Modi said in a tweet.
The development comes in the wake of the US backing temporarily suspending intellectual property protection for Covid-19 vaccines. The US will also actively participate in the World Trade Organization’s (WTO’s) negotiations to make that happen.
Gates Foundation support for rights waiver on vaccines

Washington DC [US], May 7 (ANI): In a significant shift of stance, Gates Foundation has followed the line taken by the Biden administration to back the temporary waiver of intellectual property on COVID-19 vaccines. No barriers should stand in the way of equitable access to vaccines, including intellectual property, which is why we are supportive of a narrow waiver during the pandemic. Those negotiations will occur via the WTO process, led by country negotiators, said Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman.
Suzman said that Gates Foundation will continue to advocate for countries with supply to share doses. And we will continue to advocate for countries with supply to share doses with those without as soon as possible, and for COVAX to be fully funded, he said.
