UAE registers more than 25,000 patents at the end of 2020, Ministry of Economy says

Patents are a method for legally recognising innovation in a product or service and their growth in the Emirates is in line with the nation s own rise in the World Intellectual Property Organisation s Global Innovation Index rankings. The UAE climbed two places in the 2020 index to 34th globally and third in the Northern Africa and Western Asia region. The UAE has signed more than ten agreements with international institutions that support intellectual property rights, including the Budapest Treaty on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms for the Purposes of Patent Procedure and the Strasbourg Agreement on the International Patent Classification.

A patently wrong regime Updated: Updated: April 28, 2021 01:14 IST Over the last few decades, intellectual property rules have served as a lethal barrier to the right to access healthcare Share Article AAA Over the last few decades, intellectual property rules have served as a lethal barrier to the right to access healthcare Even an unprecedented pandemic can do little, it appears, to upset the existing global regime governing monopoly rights over the production and distribution of life-saving drugs. If anything, since the onset of COVID-19, we’ve only seen a reaffirmation of intellectual property rules that have served as a lethal barrier to the right to access healthcare over the last few decades. The neo-liberal order, under which these laws exist, is so intractable today that a matter as seemingly simple as a request for a waiver on patent protections is seen as a claim unworthy of exception.
