Carlow Nationalist — INMO calls on WTO to waive vaccine intellectual property rules

INMO calls on WTO to waive vaccine intellectual property rules Tuesday, March 09, 2021 James Cox The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has today joined with nursing and healthcare unions around the world in calling for the waiving of Intellectual Property rules regarding Covid-19 vaccines. Alongside members of the Global Nurses Union (GNU), the INMO is calling on the Council for Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (Trips) of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to support the proposed waiver “to ensure equitable and speedy vaccine production and distribution”. In a letter issued this morning to the chair of the WTO Council for Trips, healthcare workers urged the council “to take immediate and decisive action to dramatically mitigate and eventually end the catastrophic death and suffering caused by the Covid-19 pandemic”.

Concerns over proposed intellectual property waiver

Concerns over proposed intellectual property waiver 09 Mar 2021 / 20:34 H. We refer to Prof Jomo Kwame Sundaram’s articles attacking the intellectual property (IP) system over the last few months, including “Intellectual property monopolies block vaccine access” (16/12/2020), “Year of living dangerously?” (06/01/2021), “Caught in a tangled web of vaccine nationalism” (04/02/2021) and “Intellectual property cause of death, genocide” (15/02/2021). It is unfortunate that Prof Jomo has decided to use the word genocide in his most recent article as it is improper and has clearly been chosen to provoke an emotional response rather than promoting constructive discussion. Genocide is deliberate targeting of a nationality or ethnic group with the intention of elimination. There is no evidence to support a claim that any group has been deliberately targeted for elimination by IP owners.
