India s plan for supplying affordable Covid vaccine gains traction among WTO members Rahul Shrivastava
India s aim to provide affordable Covid vaccine to poorer nations across the world has received a shot in the arm, with its request gaining traction among members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
The country and South Africa had earlier submitted a request for Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) waiver for the Covid vaccine at the WTO in October 2020. India s request is now gaining traction at the WTO.
At the moment, some western nations are under immense pressure to accept India s proposal at WTO, with 115 MPs of the European Parliament supporting TRIPS Waiver. They joined 57 WTO members, who have backed India s leadership to demand a waiver of intellectual property on COVID medicine for containment and treatment of Covid-19.
TAGUIG CITY, Feb. 26 The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) lauded efforts at the House of Representatives to consolidate the bills that will amend the Intellectual Property (IP) Code of 1998, taking the much-needed modernization of the IP law closer to fruition.
The consolidation will be undertaken by a Technical Working Group (TWG) created earlier this month by the House Committee on Trade and Industry. The bills being merged are House Bill (HB) 8062, authored by Representatives Christopher V.P. De Venecia and Sharon S. Garin; HB 1597, by Deputy Speaker Michael L. Romero; and HB 8620, by Deputy Speaker Weslie T. Gatchalian.

New Delhi, Feb 26: There is a need for a true vaccine internationalism in the current scenario and waiver of certain intellectual property obligations is an effective and pragmatic way to achieve it, according to Brajendra Navnit, Indian Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the WTO.
In October 2020, India and South Africa submitted a proposal suggesting a waiver for all WTO (World Trade Organization) members on the implementation, application and enforcement of certain provisions of the TRIPS Agreement in relation to the prevention, containment or treatment of COVID-19.
