Patent waiver: WTO members split on talks

Patent waiver: WTO members split on talks © Provided by The Times of India NEW DELHI: The number of WTO members willing to evaluate a proposal from India, South Africa and other developing countries for patent waiver for Covid vaccines, drugs and devices seems to have swelled, even as Switzerland, the European Union, Singapore, Brazil and Korea are among those yet to come on board. At the first meeting of the TRIPS Council after the joint proposal was submitted last week, US was among countries that encouraged others to come forward with “something they can say yes to”. In fact, China was among the countries that sought an early decision, arguing that the initial proposal was submitted at the start of October. But several others, including Taiwan and Norway, continued to remain rigid on the need for discussion. The European Union sought easing of access and supported a move for compulsory licensing to waive patent rights but did not suggest when it will submit a proposal.
