Bayelsa: Labour hails Diriâs worker-friendly policies

Yenagoa, May 1, 2021 The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have lauded the worker-friendly disposition of Gov. Douye Diri of Bayelsa.
The workersâ unions, in a joint address at this yearâs Workers Day celebration, particularly commended Diriâs commitment to prompt payment of salaries and gratuity.
Mr Bipre Ndiomu, the stateâs NLC chairman, who delivered the address in Yenagoa on Saturday, said that Diriâs emergence as governor in February 2020 had been a huge blessing to Bayelsa.
He also praised the governor for standing by the workers at the peak of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The federal government has said the N30, 000 national minimum wage is binding on all employers of labour, including state governments and the private sector. Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, made the clarification on Saturday in Abuja during the Workers Day celebrations. This followed agitations by labour over the non-implementation of the national minimum wage by some state governments.
Organised labour, under the aegis of its umbrella organisations, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), bemoaned the high rate of job loses and casualisation of workers in the country.

Gov. Gboyega Oyetola of Osun, on Saturday, expressed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers in the state.
Oyetola, however, urged the workers to approach their jobs with renewed vigour and commitment.
The governor, who made the remarks at the 2021 Workers’ Day celebrations, held at Osogbo Township Stadium, acknowledged the roles of the workers in building the economy of the state.
He expressed gratitude to them for their hard work, resilience, and sacrifice, even in the face of daunting challenges.
“Annual Workers’ Day affords us an opportunity to pay deserved tribute to you, our teeming workers, who are the engine room of government.

The Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Dr Anthony Yaw Baah says 800,000 workers in Ghana suffered from pay cut as a result of the coronavirus pandemic on the local economy.
Recounting the impact of the virus on workers during the May Day celebration on Saturday May 1 in Accra, Dr Baah said workers have had to endure hardship induced by the pandemic.
“800,000 workers were affected by pay reduction,” he stated at the event which was attended by President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia .
He further revealed that poor housing for workers and delay in the negotiation of a national minimum wage are among some of the concerns the president must deal with.

So far this year alone, Colombia has seen 33 massacres of social leaders, trade union organizers and ex-guerrilla fighters belonging to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). At least 119 people have been murdered by paramilitary groups, state security forces or unidentified assassins as of April 27, according to the Instituto de Estudio para el Desarrollo y la Paz, or Institute of Study for Development and Peace. According to Colombiaâs Ombudsmanâs Office, in the first three months of 2021, more than 27,000 Colombians were forcibly displaced due to violence by groups fighting for territorial control and control of the drug trade â an increase of 177 percent compared to last
