The National leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has commended Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State for prompt payment of salaries inspite of the economic challenges facing the country.
It also lauded the governor for his prudent management of the state’s resources resulting to the execution of capital projects in addition to the payment of salaries.
Consequently, the organised labour pledged to work harmoniously with the governor to ensure that the welfare of workers still occupy the front burner in government’s priorities.
After meeting with the governor and other top government officials, the labour leaders stressed the need for support for the Governor to enable him do more for workers.
The coincidence is instructive. Barely 24 hours after Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, last Wednesday, carpeted the Federal Government for allegedly giving up on the battle against corruption, the Transparency International (TI) released its annual global corruption index whose fatwa aligned with Soyinka’s verdict.
Soyinka, while appearing on Africa Independent Television (AIT’s) morning magazine programme, Kakaaki, noted that the system had been so corrupted that cases are allowed to extend and eventually go silent with the deployment of all kinds of technicalities.
“There are so many people who should be in prison if this government had not run out of steam, and so the system is being manipulated, the laureate said, adding, “there are cases where the prosecution had reached the level where evidence had been given on governors who had been stealing and depositing in bits and pieces so as not to flout a certain regulation.

After Thursday’s announcement that the country experienced its worst economic decline since World War 2 last year, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) on Friday called on the government to provide a wage subsidy to workers.
In a statement released on Friday, TUCP President and Party-list Rep. Raymond C. Mendoza said, “We have long been urging the Government to get ahead of the recession and put into place wage subsidies for those who are struggling to stay afloat. A wage subsidy is urgently needed, as the economy has not bounced back as predicted by the economic managers.”
