LONDON, May 25 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Gig workers using some of Britain s most popular labour platforms, including Amazon Flex and Uber Eats, often earn less than the minimum wage, researchers said on Tuesday, as they called for stronger protections.
Amazon s courier arm and cab services Bolt and Ola came bottom in a University of Oxford study looking at how fairly 11 of the country s best known platforms treat workers, with all three scoring zero points. The lack of stable income due to the highly variable nature of the demand for gig services and the lack of any formal employment protection means gig companies wield an exceptional amount of power over gig workers, the study said.
A spokesman from Southend Council, said: “Southend residents responded and showed solidarity in their thousands last year and continued to show solidarity by supporting weekly take the knee events, circles of peace and the recent International Day of anti-racism in which the town went purple and an over 40-strong public meeting was held online. “All this in support of the commitment to challenge racism in all its forms. “These collective events aim to continue to highlight the need for action in Britain in combating institutional racism, an area which the unions and the council have been working together on, and to shine that light and work together in challenging all forms of racism in our workplaces and communities in Southend.”

London, May 25 : People across the UK will be taking the knee on Tuesday evening to mark the one-year death anniversary of George Floyd, the African-American who was killed in police custody in the US city of Minneapolis on this day last year.
It is part of events planned worldwide to commemorate his death, reports dpa news agency.
The demonstration, which has been organised by campaigners Stand Up To Racism and the UK s Trade Union Congress, will see people in cities and towns across England, Scotland and Wales show their support for black lives.

The organised labour at the weekend cautioned the National Economic Council (NEC) against approving a recommendation by the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) seeking a N385 pump price for petrol.
State affiliates of the organised labour, in separate interviews with THISDAY, said doing so will unleash hardships on the people and heat up the polity.
Their warning came ahead of a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), scheduled for Abuja tomorrow, to deliberate on the issue.
The 36 governors, under the auspices of the NGF, at a meeting last week, had endorsed the N385 per litre pump price recommended by a committee set up by NEC, and headed by the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai.
