Congressman Darin LaHood of Illinois has thrown his support behind proposed bipartisan legislation that would provide relief to the hospitality industry and its workers.
The Hospitality and Commerce Job Recovery Act of 2021 is designed to create new recovery incentives for hospitality and trade shows, extend the employee retention tax credit to reduce layoffs and keep people in the hospitality industry employed, create a perishable food and beverage credit to help small businesses cover the cost of inventory lost during COVID-19-related closures, and provide a tax credit for middle-class families to jump-start travel when safe.
Tori Emerson Barnes issued a statement on the COVID relief package advancing through Congress.
“The relief package includes several provisions that will help accelerate the travel industry’s recovery from the devastating impacts of the virus. Among them: resources for vaccine distribution, airport funding, and Economic Development Administration grants.
“Given the severity of the impact on the travel and tourism industry, more work remains to provide critical recovery and stimulus measures to safely restore our industry. While we appreciate that there is more money included for the PPP, that program needs to be extended past March 31 and a third draw on loans should be allowed for the hardest hit businesses. We also call on Congress to pass the Hospitality and Commerce Job Recovery Act, and to dedicate additional funding for travel promotion grants.

A group of industry backers in Congress has reintroduced a tax relief bill that includes an individual tax credit aimed at stimulating leisure travel.
The U.S. Travel Association praised the introduction Thursday of the Hospitality and Commerce Job Recovery Act, saying it provides stimulus needed to help bring back the millions of travel jobs lost to the pandemic.
In addition to giving individuals tax credits of up to $1,500 for leisure travel in the U.S., the bill would create a temporary business tax credit for meetings and events, temporarily restore an entertainment business expense and provide tax relief for restaurants.
