Chinese state media continued its efforts to deflect criticism of human rights abuses against the Uyghur Muslims of Xinjiang province on Wednesday, as the state-run Xinhua news service wrote a furious editorial denouncing all accounts of oppression against the Uyghurs as a “string of lies” fabricated by “anti-China forces in the West.”
“They have invented these lies through methods including, but not limited to, data abuse, distortion of information, fabrication of cases, cherry-picking of source materials, and logical contradictions,” Xinhua shrieked, insisting the widely-cited estimate of a million Uyghurs held in concentration camps is based on phony studies concocted by Beijing’s fanatical enemies:

In a futile bid to defame China, some anti-China forces in the West continue to fabricate lies about China committing atrocities in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.
Their distortion of the truth, with allegations of forced labor and sterilization of Uygurs on an industrial scale , lays bare their intention to use human rights as a tool for their political manipulation. Having repeatedly snubbed China s invitation for them to visit and see for themselves the situation in the autonomous region, they rely instead on the cherry-picked accounts of the very extremists whose malign influence China is trying to curb in the region.

According to Chinese government statistics, Xinjiang courts sentenced 99,326 people in 2017 and 133,198 in 2018. The authorities have not released sentencing statistics for 2019.
The Xinjiang Victims Database – a nongovernmental organization that has documented the cases of over 8,000 detainees based on family accounts and official documents – estimates that the number of people sentenced in 2019 may be comparable to those in the previous two years. Of the 178 cases whose year of sentencing is known, the number of people sentenced in 2019 is roughly the average of those of 2017 and 2018. Source: Xinjiang Victims Database
