RESURFACING work is currently taking place on the A66 until the end of July. Some motorists have questioned why works are taking place given the dual carriageway plans for the vital route, but Highways England says the resurfacing work is essential, especially as the dualling plan has not been signed off. The authority says that parts of the surface west of Bowes has significantly aged over 35 years and needs repairing. Work started earlier this month and while most sections are being carried out 24/7, there will be work that can only be done overnight. As the scheme is running over several weeks, crews will need to take rest days/nights which is why motorists may sometimes see no activity on the sites.
