Hoboken breaks ground on $230 million climate change resiliency project

Nine years ago, Superstorm Sandy left the city of Hoboken under water.
Hurricane-force winds and a 14-foot storm surge submerged roughly 80% of the bowl-shaped city, causing an estimated $100 million worth of damage.
Now, the city is breaking ground on a multimillion-dollar resiliency project aimed at preparing for the next storm.

United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia Fudge, Governor Phil Murphy, legislators, and local officials broke ground on the Rebuild by Design Hudson River Project in Hoboken this week.
The resilient infrastructure project, made possible by $230 million in Superstorm Sandy recovery funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, aims to protect Hoboken and portions of Jersey City and Weehawken from storm surge flooding and rising sea-level threats posed by climate change.

WASHINGTON The federal departments of health and housing have launched a joint project to provide coronavirus vaccines to the homeless and people living in low-income neighborhoods and subsidized housing.

Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge made the announcement on Wednesday during a visit to Community of Hope. It’s a service organization in the nation’s capital that’s had high rates of coronavirus and relatively low rates of vaccination. The organization runs community health centers while also working to end homelessness among families.
