Following a tough year for the nation s small businesses, Topeka leaders this week celebrated local businesses that weathered the storm and demonstrated excellence throughout 2020.
At the Greater Topeka Partnership s 40th Annual Small Business Awards ceremony Tuesday, six local businesses were chosen from among 18 finalists in six categories as award winners:
• Dialogue Coffee House was recognized as the Emerging Entrepreneur of Distinction.
• The Capper Foundation was honored with the Nonprofit Award of Distinction.
• TLJ Consulting was recognized as the Woman Business of Distinction.
• Evergy Plaza, which is owned and operated by the Downtown Topeka Foundation, received the Innovation Award.
• And Dobski & Associates Inc., which owns and operates 19 McDonald s throughout northeast Kansas, including nine in Topeka, was awarded the Capital City Business of Distinction.

Jake Elliott-Hook and Amee Ritchie, of Tranent, have developed the world’s first reusable bottle made from plants. A graduate of Queen Margaret University (QMU), Jake saw a gap in the market when his fellow students complained their water bottles ended up smelling and tasting of plastic or metal. Jake, 24, told the Courier: “Everyone in my class had a reusable bottle and they all kept talking about how they only had them for a month or two and then they’d get smelly and they’d have to throw them away.

Horatiu Tepes, Bilka CEO, was named on Thursday evening as the winner of the EY Entrepreneur of the Year - Romania 2020.
According to a press release from EY, he competed for the grand title with 38 other business leaders and will represent Romania in the EY World Entrepreneur of the Year World Final on June 10, 2021.
Bilka is a 100 pct Romanian company, from central Brasov, market leader in Romania in the field of roofing, specializing in the production and development of complete systems for roofs (metal tile, rain system and accessories) for residential and industrial constructions. In his 14 years of presence on the Romanian market, entrepreneur Horatiu Tepes has transformed the business from a roofing supplier into a European brand.
