MIDDLETOWN A city woman who says she was born addicted to drugs before being sent to foster care has finally discovered a large family of blood relatives she never knew existed.
Local artist Leavy Wells Jr. creates sidewalk chalk art during the DTSB First Fridays event in downtown South Bend.
Janice Purnell, foster parent recruiter for Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth, a nonprofit, therapeutic foster care licensing agency, invited both artists and the community to create sidewalk artwork in support of foster care programs for children.
May is Foster Care Awareness Month, and Indiana has a challenge in finding foster parents for the 12,000 children currently in foster care.

RICHMOND, Va. May is Foster Care Awareness Month, so CBS 6 wanted to share stories showcasing the need for foster parents in our area, and what it s like for families who have been there for these children.
Lori Jacocks is one of those foster parents who felt a calling to become one years ago. Something that I always wanted to do, you know, growing up. And, we were in a place we felt like it was a good time in our life to do that, and we just saw where we could make a difference and thought that it will bring blessings into our life, which it has, she said.
Solano County recognizes Asian, Pacific Islander communities; condemns recent hate crimes
FAIRFIELD The Solano County Board of Supervisors became the latest group Tuesday to condemn the recent hate crime attacks on Asian and Pacific Islander Americans.
The action was taken as part of the board’s recognition of May as Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
The hate crime resolution states, “The Solano County Board of Supervisor hereby affirms that our county:
“1) Stands united in condemning and denouncing any and all anti-Asian and Pacific Islander sentiment in any form;
“2) Condemns all manifestations of expressions of racism, and anti-AAPI or ethnic intolerance;
