Phase 1 work at Martin Marietta Park, New Bern’s 900 acre entertainment and water sports project, is set to ramp up this summer with the addition of a new swim beach, playground and shelter area.
According to Foster Hughes, Parks and Recreation director, the City has just received an Army Corps of Engineers wetland permit for the swim beach. Hughes said the goal is to open the beach sometime this summer.
“We’ve actually had some scuba divers that have been going out and assessing the area that we’re looking at,” said Hughes. “We pretty much knew how shallow it was at a certain depth so they’re mapping that out for us and making sure there are no hazards and things like that. We want to make it as safe as possible.”
