A towboat pushing six barges loaded with aggregate got into trouble near Mile 235 on the western side of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) January 29, with the tow’s lead port barge sinking near the center of the channel. By about midday, the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit (MSU) Lake Charles had restricted the GIWW to one-way traffic between Miles 234 and 236 west of Harvey Lock, due to the obstruction.
The Coast Guard closed the GIWW the following day, January 30, between Calcasieu Lock and Grand Lake Bridge as salvage efforts got underway. By the next day, the other five barges in the tow had been moved to the bank and secured. The Coast Guard allowed one-way traffic through the area while additional salvage equipment was mobilized. The waterway was closed to navigation again the evening of February 1 while the barge was refloated.

The mv. Kathleen has been tripping tows through the locks between the Lower Mississippi River at Baton Rouge, La., and the bayous that connect to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) for close to 70 years.
For that entire time, the Kathleen has been part of the Businelle Towing family, now in its fifth generation of family leadership.
Their family story, and that of the Kathleen, is one firmly connected to the waterways of south Louisiana and the maritime industry that thrives there.
“I think they started building it in about 1950, and they christened it in 1952,” said John Wayne Businelle, the third-generation, semi-retired owner-operator of Businelle Towing and Pelican Ship Yard & Machine Shop, where the Kathleen was built.

Memphis, Tenn.-based Southern Towing Company (STC) said Tuesday it has acquired family-owned Devall Towing, in a deal that expands STC’s towing operations into specialty chemical products.
Headquartered in Sulphur, La., Devall is a towboat and barge operator for specialty chemicals along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and Lower Mississippi River, operating 36 towboats and 125 liquid tank barges.
