From bioengineering and gene editing to cybersecurity, 5G, and much more, the future is very much under the spotlight at the 40th annual Gulf Information Technology Exhibition in Dubai. It’s the only major tech event to have gone ahead this year with over 1200 exhibitors from 60 countries.

Among the most eye-catching exhibits, incredibly lifelike humanoids called Mesmer robots, designed by Engineered Arts. With the ability to sense body language and even mood, they have uncanny powers of interaction.
“What is your purpose? Why do you exist?” I ask Jen the Robot.
“That is a very deep and philosophical question James,” comes back the reply. “Why do you exist?”

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, has said his ministry will work with the Federal Capital Territory Administration and some state governments to set up ‘smart cities’ in major cities.
Speaking with journalists at the end of this year’s Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX), Mr Pantami said his visit to the Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSOA) and discussions with top executives there had provided Nigeria with insights and possible partnerships for the proposed project.

The Automated Kitchen can gather ingredients from a smart fridge, fill pans, mix, pour, adjust hob temperatures and serve up just like a regular cook would.
Unlike a human, however, it will never complain about having to do the washing up.
