Modeled after Time Magazine’s annual honor, the Town Crier’s Los Altans of the Year, now in its 26th year, recognizes local residents who have spread goodwill through their good deeds, enhancing Los Altos’ reputation as a community.
Typically, the honors have gone to older recipients with a long, demonstrated record of volunteerism and impact. But 2020 was no typical year. It has forced us to see and do things differently.
We were struck by how many of our “heroes” were young people who really stepped up and made a difference. They did so despite dealing with their own challenges with remote education, cancellation of school sports and a host of other unprecedented obstacles.

In more ways than anyone would care to count, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live. Near the top of the list are the ways in which we experience music. Live music venues from concert halls and intimate clubs to festivals and cruises were hit the hardest, and the future of these performance spaces remains uncertain.
Fortunately, we still have plenty of recorded music to enjoy while we face the possibility of both a vaccine and further lockdowns.
Staying productive

The bipartisan “herd immunity” policy of the US government has created an unmitigated disaster and California has become the new epicenter of the pandemic. Every day, tens of thousands of Californians are infected with COVID-19, leading to more preventable deaths. Since November 19, the state has reached new records for daily infections almost every day. The Southern half of the state has entirely run out of intensive care unit (ICU) beds. Under these conditions, Democrats in the state legislature are proposing “emergency legislation” in Assembly Bill 10, not to contain the disease but rather to force schools to conduct in-person instruction.
The largest yoga chain in the U.S. YogaWorks filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to the pandemic and shuttered more than 60 studios. The company still offers online classes and teacher training courses.
The Japanese retailer closed its doors in California, including Third Street Promenade, Hollywood, Santa Anita, Stanford, San Jose, Santa Monica and SOMA.
