CHICAGO, IL – It was the moment they had waited for 8 months. The staff at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Illinois this week received their first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines. They immediately began administering those vaccines to staff members.
“This is the moment we have all been waiting for. The beginning to an end. Frontline clinicians couldn’t hold back their joy and excitement as they watched the covid-19 vaccine arrive at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin,” the hospital said earlier in the week.
Now, the administering of the vaccine is on hold after four employees had adverse reactions. 3,000 employees received their first dose of the vaccine this week. Hospital officials say they conducted a “thorough internal review,” consulting with infectious disease and clinical experts, and decided to resume their vaccination program on Sunday.
According to officials, one of the four cases appears to be a severe allergic reaction to the vaccine. The individual who suffered the reaction was hospitalized overnight for monitoring, but officials say that the person has been discharged.
Because of privacy laws the hospital couldn’t go into specifics about that person’s medical history.
The other three individuals were dealing with more typical reactions to the vaccine, and all were doing well on Saturday, officials say.
